Respect in Sport

In the 2012-2013 season, MHRA is beginning to implement the Respect in Sport program. The Executive feels that this is a valuable and important program to help educate all MHRA members about the inherent value and importance of mutual respect between parents, players, coaches, and referees.

This program has widely used in other sports associations within Canada and internationally, at all tiers of sport, and in national, provincial, and community sports associations. The idea is that through a little education, common sources of negative experiences in sport can be avoided. It is well known that the most common causes of players, coaches, and referees leaving a sport are negative interactions with other parties. RiS helps give parents, coaches, and other volunteers the tools to deal with situations in a positive manner, and helps ensure a fun and safe experience for all.

More information about the program can be viewed at

The first phase of this program for MHRA is the Respect in Sport Parent Program. This consists of an online course that takes approximately one hour to complete. The cost of this program is just $12, and can be paid by credit card or PayPal directly on the website. Each Ringette family in MHRA will be required to have one parent complete the course. It does not matter how many children play ringette within a family, only one parent will have to complete the course.

Phase two will be the Respect in Sport Coach Program, which will be implemented at the start of the 2013-2014 season. Details will be forthcoming at a later date. For now, it is important to note that no cost will be incurred by MHRA coaches.

In addition, the certification does not expire, so a family member will not have to take the course every season. In addition, the RiS course is cross-sport, so it is important to note that if you have already completed the course for Minor Hockey or Soccer, you do not need to retake the course. This goes both ways, so if you take the course for Ringette, you will not need to retake it for another sport.

As this program is so important to Medicine Hat Ringette, the deadline for certification will be February 1st of 2013. If a parent has not completed the certification by this time, their children will not be able to play in MHRA games until the certification is produced. The player(s) will be eligible to play once again as soon as proof of certification is produced.

To prove your certification, simply send your certification number to your Head Coach and/or Team Manager, and they should forward them to the Vice President of Administration.
